Sungrazers

Sungrazing Comets travel very near the sun. They were first identified by Kreutz in the 19th century.

New members were slowly added. But recent solar satellites reveal small members arriving in the sun's vicinity several times a year.

Several large, naked-eye sungrazers have been observed breaking up at perihelion.

The extremely close perihelion distances (100 to 400 thousand miles from the sun's surface) have prompted the theory that Kreutz sungrazers originated with one large parent comet.

The following links reveal details on all known sungrazing comets.
